“Ambushed”

Camp Curtis, Va.
December 19, 1861

Dear Emblem: – Day before yesterday Companies A. and L. left Camp for a scout. They halted when they were near the Old Bone Mill, when Lieut. Jane Way of Company L, with one private, rode some distance ahead, when not seeing any persons they attempted to return, when suddenly, some fifteen rebels jumped out into the road and commenced to hollow, and then fired upon them. Lieut. Jane Way fell at the first fire, and at the same time the private’s horse either stumbled or was shot, the man did not wait to see, but took to his heels with the bullets which the rebels sent after him wizing around his ears. He said the Lieutenant had hardly reached the ground before he was surrounded by the rebels, who went to work searching his pockets. They took his overcoat and then left him. He crawled to some distance when he fell in with some of his men. He received eight balls and buck shot in his hip, and a ball through his arm. He is dangerously wounded, but it is said will recover.

Company B. and M. went out yesterday, and when close to Pophic Church they came upon a party of rebel Cavalry, and Infantry. They drew up in line of battle, but seeing that the rebels were too strong for them they fired into them, bringing four rebels from their horses. They then retreated, followed by the rebels a short distance, who fired upon the boys without effect. They all arrived in Camp safe, where they received the hearty cheers of the regiment.
